Abstract

The widespread use of social media among university students has created new opportunities for communication and learning, but it has also increased exposure to cybersecurity threats. This study examined how students’ social media behavior influences their vulnerability to cyber risks in higher education institutions in Uganda. The research focused on students from Victoria University, Ndejje University, and YMCA Vocational Institute. A cross-sectional mixed-methods approach was used, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative interviews to capture both patterns of behavior and students’ experiences with online risks. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and chi-square tests, while qualitative responses were examined through thematic analysis. The findings indicate that common practices such as sharing personal information online, reusing passwords, accepting unknown friend requests, and clicking unverified links significantly increase students’ exposure to threats such as phishing, identity theft, and account compromise. The study also found gaps in cybersecurity awareness and limited institutional guidance on safe online practices. These results highlight the need for universities to strengthen digital safety education and integrate cybersecurity awareness into student training and orientation programs. Enhancing students’ understanding of safe social media use can reduce vulnerability and support a more secure digital environment within higher education institutions.
