Abstract

Effective healthcare workforce coordination and organizational communication are fundamental to the delivery of safe, continuous, efficient, and patient-centered services in behavioral healthcare settings. However, behavioral healthcare organizations frequently encounter workforce fragmentation, unclear professional responsibilities, inadequate interdisciplinary communication, staffing imbalances, inconsistent information-sharing practices, and organizational structures that constrain collaborative service delivery. These challenges may compromise care continuity, employee effectiveness, operational efficiency, and patient outcomes, particularly in multidisciplinary environments involving psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, counselors, and administrative personnel. This review aims to systematically map and synthesize existing evidence on healthcare workforce coordination and organizational communication in behavioral healthcare settings and develop an evidence-informed conceptual framework integrating workforce, communication, leadership, and organizational determinants of coordinated care. A scoping review methodology, guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), is proposed to identify relevant peer-reviewed studies, theoretical contributions, and organizational research. The review will examine workforce role clarity, interdisciplinary collaboration, staffing coordination, communication structures, leadership support, information exchange, and organizational accountability. Evidence will be organized through descriptive mapping, thematic synthesis, and conceptual integration to identify relationships among organizational conditions, coordination mechanisms, communication effectiveness, and healthcare service outcomes. The proposed conceptual model will position organizational leadership, workforce capacity, professional role integration, structured communication, and feedback mechanisms as interconnected determinants of workforce coordination and behavioral healthcare performance. The review is expected to clarify fragmented theoretical perspectives, identify evidence gaps, and establish a structured foundation for understanding how workforce coordination and organizational communication influence care continuity, staff collaboration, patient safety, and organizational effectiveness. Its contribution will be an evidence-informed conceptual framework and practical recommendations for organizational policy, interdisciplinary communication, workforce governance, and future research. The study will remain a scoping review and conceptual synthesis without developing, implementing, or experimentally validating a technological or operational prototype.
